If you feel the M1 can handle your workflow, I would say take advantage of any deals or look at refurb prices on the 16GB M1. Just upgrading the ram and drive will set you back to a total price of 1,100.00 retail. I'd say that's a question worth asking yourself. For me that would be the mid range 2.6 ghz i5 model with 16gb of ram and a 256 PCIe SSD (you can get more storage by picking up a thunderbolt drive if and when you need it). Thus its much harder to justify because the extra performance is not required for my workflow. Then there's the fact that an M1X or M2 will likely have a much higher base-line price, at which point its going outside of my preferred budget once RAM and a little extra storage is added. No doubt, I'll be a bit jealous when the M1X/M2 releases, but the performance of the M1 is more than adequate for my needs and it's especially satisfying having got a refurb and saved a good chunk of cash. I will be getting a hub, but even without one, the lack of ports has not been the hinderance I thought it might be, so far. Refurbs from the Apple Store look and feel like new.

It's just fantastic, and handles everything I throw at it - its such a huge upgrade from a PC built in 2016, so your upgrade experience would be even more emphatic. After around a months use, I can honestly say I really regret umming and arring for the better part of six months. I bought an Apple refurb 16GB/512GB M1 Mini for a very good price. Then I had my hand forced when my main PC died. I was the same, basically it came down to the possibility of getting more ports rather than the even better performance it will have - since the M1 is more than up to the task of my workflow (and I would say yours too).

Or perhaps I can just suck it up and stick with the 2012 + my 2018 MacBook Pro until the new Mac Mini comes out?Įven though the M1 has more than enough performance for my workflow (4K video editing, audio editing, photo editing) initially I decided to wait for the M1X/M2 - even though it could be 6/12 months or even longer. I have spent the past ten days researching performances and what not I was initially set on purchasing the 16GB one, thinking I'd stick with the device for a long time, but now I'm debating whether it makes sense to take advantage of the Costco sale and just snag a 8GB that I can then trade back to Apple when the M1X comes out.

I am an academic working at the intersection of Digital Humanities and Literature, I spend hours on end at my desk-I do some basic coding, run a bunch of software (heavy web apps at time, building ArcGIS Story Maps is driving me crazy on this machine right now) at the same time, Photoshop and light video editing are a 2-3 times a week affair. I must admit, I am not so concerned about having the latest processor, as I am about getting a slicker device and more ports without recurring to an external dongle/hub. I've been itching to replace my 2012 Quad-Core Mac Mini with a new M1 I've been debating all week whether I want to buy a 8GB for $550 (Costco Sale + One-Time Coupon), a 16GB for $700 (B&H Sale + PayPal Promo both prices for the 256GB and before taxes), or wait (3 months? 6 months?) for the new M1X.
